Marburg, 1986/3/2
Mia U. was a passionate veterinary surgeon. She had taken over the practice just three months earlier. The brass plaque on the door was immaculately polished and the waiting room was always full. In her private life too, the Erfurt native was on the fast track. Her boyfriend Ralf, a young architect, often waited for her outside the practice in the evenings. According to Ralf’s parents, the couple spent many evenings at the Schwarz coffee house, sketching out plans for a future together on paper napkins. The two were also already dreaming of having children. Everything was going according to plan. On the evening of 22 February 1986, Mia closed the door to treatment room 2 behind her to carry out a routine follow-up check. The lady at reception, Mrs Brüggemann, heard no scraping of chairs or running water from inside. Not even the usually distinct sound of the metal cabinet opening. When she went to check on her at 5.55 p.m., shortly before closing time, the room was completely empty. The window was locked from the inside and the air smelled ████ of damp concrete and faintly, but unmistakably, of chlorine. The grey cat was still sitting on the examination table. First it licked its paw, then raised its head and opened its mouth. The cat let out Mia U.
