Marburg, 1988/10/4
Rainer Schwarz loved his coffee black. As the owner of the extremely popular ‘Kaffeehaus Schwarz’ – which literally translates to ‘Coffee House Black’ – he practically had to, for professional reasons. Lately, however, Rainer wasn’t just called Schwarz – he was increasingly looking the part, with dark circles under his eyes and a morbidly pale complexion. Neighbours reported that, according to his own account, he was dreaming of his own death with increasing frequency and would wake up drenched in sweat afterwards. On 24 September 1988, he finally ordered a heavy oak coffin from the Rhomberg funeral parlour. He placed the invoice on the dining table in front of him, made himself a coffee and waited. Six days later, his good friend Frank from the fourth floor had the flat broken into, as he could no longer get hold of Rainer. Heart failure. No foul play. The flat was sealed off. Mr Schwarz was grey. The coffee was cold.
