Marburg, 22 July 1993
The reading of the will of the industrialist’s widow, Marlies von Kast, took exactly four minutes. Her 44-year-old son, Bodo, appeared accompanied by his two lawyers. He had never worked a day in his life and now waited, bored, for the transfer of control. The notary simply slid a yellowed envelope across the table to him. Bodo pulled out a red children’s savings book from 1956, issued in his name. Balance: 8.65 Deutschmarks. Bodo had made his last deposit thirty-three years ago. Enclosed was a crumpled educational leaflet: ‘Hansi the Hard-Working Squirrel – How Do I Learn to Save Properly?’ One of the lawyers immediately demanded the statutory share, amounting to millions. The notary looked unimpressed. Marlies von Kast had long since transferred the entire liquid assets into an irrevocable Luxembourg blocked trust. The penthouse in the Wohnpark Arminius residential complex where Bodo lived had already been sold by his mother the previous year – with the strict condition that he vacate it exactly four weeks after her death. Swept clean. The statutory share was transferred to the heir in the form of a single, notarised asset: he was now the sole owner of an asbestos-contaminated, unsellable industrial silo in the middle of nowhere, forty kilometres inland from Nerja in Andalusia. Property tax and mandatory remediation would drive him into personal bankruptcy within three weeks. Bodo stared silently at Hansi the squirrel.
